Seven Years on the Road — And a New Chapter
Seven years after leaving the farm, we could finally put some numbers to the adventure.
We had put 105,776 kilometres on the motorhome, with a total of 357 relocations along the way. We travelled through all 10 Canadian provinces and 2 of the 3 territories, with Nunavut being the only one we missed. Since there are no roads connecting Nunavut to the rest of Canada, getting there would have required a very different kind of adventure.
In the United States, we visited all 50 states, including Hawaii.
It took us 6 years, 11 months and 2 days to accomplish all of that.
And through it all, we spent seven years full-timing—living, travelling, exploring and making the motorhome our home.
At the time, we thought we were simply moving into a new phase by spending our summers in the condo in Osoyoos and continuing to travel in the motorhome. As it turned out, things changed a little more than we expected.
In the summer of 2023, Steve and Leslie purchased some land near Nelson, BC, and that eventually changed our living arrangement. In the spring of 2024, we purchased their share of the Osoyoos condo, making us the sole owners.
So our next chapter took shape naturally. Rather than giving up the motorhome or continuing to live in it year-round, we found a combination that works for us: winters in Tucson in the motorhome and summers in our condo in Osoyoos.
It feels like the best of both worlds. The motorhome still gives us the freedom to travel and escape the winter, while the condo gives us a comfortable home base for the summer and a place to return to between adventures.
Those numbers from our seven years on the road only tell part of the story. Behind the 105,776 kilometres and 357 relocations are thousands of kilometres on bicycles, countless hikes, motorcycle rides, campgrounds, wildlife encounters, new friends, old friends, mechanical problems, weather challenges, border crossings and more memories than we could ever count.
Seven years ago, we left the farm with a motorhome and a plan to see where the road would take us.
The road took us a lot farther than we ever imagined.
And although the way we live and travel has changed, the adventure certainly hasn’t ended. We still have a home on wheels, a home in Osoyoos, and plenty of road ahead of us.
The full-time chapter is over. The travelling isn’t.
